Israel’s controversial decision to withdraw players from the tournament was actually an inspiration

The South Korea Under-20 Football Team, led by head coach Kim Eun-joong, fell 1-3 to Israel in the third and fourth place matches of the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2023 at the Estadio Unico Diego Armando Maradona in La Plata, Argentina at 2:30 a.m. ET on Wednesday. South Korea finished the tournament in fourth place, while Israel finished in a tournament-best third place.

South Korea was eager to achieve the “beauty of the tournament” and fielded its best lineup. Lee Ji-han, Lee Chan-wook, Kang Sang-yoon, Bae Seo-joon, Kim Ji-ji, Choi Seok-hyun, Park Chang-woo, and Kim Jun-hong started, along with top performers Lee Seung-won, Lee Young-joon, and Bae Jun-ho.

Compared to South Korea, Israel’s starting lineup was different. There were changes in five positions, including goalkeeper, and a whopping three changes in the defense. There was a reason. A total of five players were called up to the senior national team for the A match. This left Israel with a total of five players on the substitutes list. This sparked controversy in Israel for dropping players in the middle of the tournament.

For Korea, it was an opportunity. The motivation to play for third or fourth place was different.

But Israel was strong. After taking the lead 메이저놀이터 early in the first half, the Israelis continued their onslaught. They even took the lead in the 18th minute when Ran Binyamin scored the first goal of the game. Korea equalized with a penalty kick from Lee Seung-won three minutes after the concession, but it was the Israelis who dominated the attack until the end of the first half.

The second half was one-sided as Israel continued to attack. The Korean players, who were physically burdened, showed up sharply in the second half.

In the end, they conceded a goal. Omer Senior, who came on as a substitute in the 30th minute of the second half, scored the winning goal, and Anan Khalili scored the consolation goal in the 40th minute. The game ended with a 3-1 victory for Israel. As controversial as the game was beforehand, it was hoped that pulling a player midway through the tournament would have a negative impact on Israel, but it only served to spur on the remaining players.
