KBO’s 48-win teammate tops Cy Young ballot…why the Dodgers are nervous

Zach Gallon (28, Arizona Diamondbacks) has been recognized as the best pitcher in the National League. MLB.com announced today (June 6) that Gallon and Shane McClanahan (Tampa Bay Rays) each topped the Cy Young voting.

MLB.com releases the results of the 안전놀이터 panel’s Cy Young voting about once a month. Points are awarded for first through fifth place votes, with a combined score determining the standings. Gallagher, the National League leader, received first-place votes from 23 of the 49 panelists who voted this month. It’s his second straight month at the top.

Gallon began his major league career with the Miami Marlins in 2019, but moved to Arizona to take his career to the next level. Last year, he realized his potential with a 12-4 record and 2.54 ERA in 31 games. This season, he’s 7-2 with a 2.75 ERA in 13 games, a .230 batting average, a 1.08 WHIP, and three home runs in 78⅔ innings.

According to MLB.com, “Gallagher finished first in the first Cy Young voting and stayed there. He leads an amazing Arizona team that is tied for first in the National League West in wins, fifth in ERA and third in strikeouts (88).” He also ranks seventh in WHIP, 13th in strikeouts and fourth in innings pitched (78.2).

In reality, Arizona has defied expectations and is tied for first place in the National League with the Dodgers. One of the driving forces is the starting rotation, led by Gallon and “reverse export myth” Merrill Kelly, a 48-game winner in the KBO. Kelly has also pitched well this season, going 7-3 with a 2.80 ERA in 12 starts. Kelly also received votes from the panel in this mock. It wasn’t a first-place vote, but it was recognized.

Kelly is third in batting average (0.194) and fifth in WHIP (1.08). He’s also tied for the National League lead in wins with Gallon. He’s fifth and sixth in ERA. Fourth and ninth in innings pitched (Kelly, 70.2). For a Dodgers team that’s been a bit lacking on the mound this year, the presence of Gallon and Kelly is daunting.

Spencer Strider (Atlanta Braves), Marcus Stroman (Chicago Cubs), Mitch Keller (Pittsburgh Pirates), and Logan Webb (San Francisco Giants) are ranked 2-5 in the National League Cy Young voting. In the American League, Nathan Iovaldi (Texas Rangers), Gerrit Cole (New York Yankees), Frazier Valdes (Houston Astros), and Sonny Gray (Minnesota Twins).
